Actor Joseph Moreland has reached a major milestone in his career: 100 credits.
For an actor, a milestone like this represents far more than a number. It reflects years of auditions, productions, characters, collaborations and the countless hours spent bringing stories to life. As Joseph looks back on the journey that brought him to his 100th credit, he is quick to recognize that some of the most meaningful experiences have come from the people he has worked with along the way.
Among the directors who have made a particular impression on him on most recent film projects are Saila Kariat, director of Jesus Land; Sandra L. Martin, director of Sugarcreek Amish Mysteries; and Anthony Fanelli, director of Claimed by the Crown. Each gave Joseph a different experience on set, but all three left him with something positive to remember.
Saila Kariat: Trusting the Actor’s Instincts
One of Joseph’s memorable projects is Jesus Land, directed by Saila Kariat, in which he plays Reverend Dykstra. Saila’s approach stood out to Joseph because of the time she took to communicate her vision before the scene began.
“Saila was great to work with,” Joseph says. “She sat with me prior to my scene, discussed her vision of my character, ‘Reverend Dykstra,’ and let me do my thing.”
For an actor, that combination of clear direction and creative trust can make a significant difference. Joseph appreciated that Kariat communicated what she envisioned for the character while still giving him the freedom to bring his own interpretation to the role. He also points to Saila’s professionalism beyond the production itself, noting that she has remained approachable and communicative even after filming wrapped.
The experience is a strong example of the kind of director-actor collaboration that can make a scene and the overall production a rewarding experience.
Sandra L. Martin: Recognizing Potential and Creating Opportunity
Joseph’s experience with director Sandra L. Martin on Sugarcreek Amish Mysteries is another example of a director making a lasting impression. His connection with the production began with an audition for what was initially a small role in Season 1. But Martin saw something in his audition that led to a bigger opportunity.
“From the beginning, my audition for a small part in season 1, Sandra liked my audition so much, she looked for a bigger part for me in Season 1—and had me back for season 2,” Joseph says.
For Joseph, that gesture made an impact. Being recognized during an audition is one thing; having a director actively find a larger opportunity for an actor is another. Martin’s decision gave Joseph the chance to make a greater contribution to the production and ultimately return for another season.
Joseph also appreciated Martin’s leadership style once production was underway. “During production, she was very present and had a grasp of what she wanted from the cast and crew, but was also very open to suggestions to make the production better,” he says.
That balance between having a clear creative vision and remaining open to collaboration is something Joseph clearly valued. His experience with Martin became a memorable part of his growing body of television work.
Anthony Fanelli: A Memorable First Vertical Production
Then there is Anthony Fanelli and Claimed by the Crown, a project Joseph remembers for a different reason: it was his first Vertical production. Joseph’s enthusiasm for the experience is unmistakable.
“Anthony was SO fun to work with,” he says. What made the production particularly enjoyable was Fanelli’s relationship with the entire cast and crew. “He had a wonderful relationship with every member of that cast and crew,” Joseph says.
That atmosphere mattered to Joseph, particularly in a production environment where collaboration between performers and filmmakers is essential. Joseph also believes Anthony’s own experience as an actor strengthened his approach as a director.
“Anthony’s strong background as an actor served to help his ability to direct and collaborate with the actors; leads, supporting and background,” Joseph says. For Joseph, the result was a production that was not only professionally rewarding but genuinely enjoyable. “It was just a very fun experience to work with Anthony,” he says.
