Early Beginnings: The Stage, SWAT, Chief of Police and the Love of Acting

Born and raised in Texas, James Healy Jr.’s journey into acting began at the  age of 15, when he first took the stage in local theatre productions. It didn’t take long for him to catch the attention of an agent, who helped him secure his first acting gig, a memorable “one-liner” in the iconic 1980 “Who Shot JR?” episode of Dallas. At just 15 years old, James qualified to join the prestigious Screen Actors Guild (SAG), and the doors to Hollywood began to open.

James was not one to let go of a dream because of life’s practicalities. While pursuing a career in acting, he recognized the need to support his family, and in 1983, he joined the police force. Despite the demands of law enforcement, James never abandoned his love for acting. He balanced his job as a patrol officer, SWAT team member, detective, and sergeant with his passion for the stage and screen, and his determination paid off.

In 1984, James married Claire Barney-Healy, the woman who would be his partner through every twist and turn in his life, and together they built a family. His law enforcement career culminated in 2008 when he was appointed Chief of Police, a role he held until his retirement in 2016. While leading a successful career, his love for acting never faded. After retiring from law enforcement, James made the bold decision to return to entertainment industry full-time.

Hollywood Legacy : From TV Roles to Big Screen Appearances

James’ move to Los Angeles in 1995 marked the beginning of a new chapter in his acting career. He quickly found himself booking roles in prominent TV shows. His early credits included an ABC after-school special and a small but memorable role on News Radio, where he had the privilege of working alongside the legendary Phil Hartman. Other early LA credits included appearances in The District, That’s So Raven, The Division, as well as guest spots on shows like Will & Grace, Judging Amy, and a recurring role on Even Stevens, which starred a young Shia LaBeouf.

As an actor, his ability to portray a wide array of characters made him a sought-after talent in both television and film. James Healy Jr. has starred in over 90 film and television series, with standout performances in critically acclaimed projects like Law and Order SVU, Leverage, Billions, East NY, Bull and in the romantic TV movie Love at the Christmas Contest, originally titled A Christmas Tree Country Contest, which premiered on the Great American Family channel.

His most recent work includes starring alongside Sarah Paulson in Dust and collaborating with the legendary Robert De Niro and director Martin Scorsese in Killers of the Flower Moon. Additionally, James appears in the critically acclaimed series A Thousand Tomorrows, where he stars in his role across six episodes of the  series.

Actor James Healy Jr. appears in Season 7, Episode 3 of Tyler Perry’s hit political drama The Oval, now available on Paramount+. Other recent roles includes his portrayal of Sheriff Hastings in 1923: Journey the Rivers of Iron, and his role as Quentin Street in The Lincoln Lawyer.

What You Didn’t Know about James Healy Jr. 

In addition to his extensive acting career, James Healy Jr. has an impressive academic background. He holds a master’s degree in Criminal Justice, a qualification that has led him to teach at the University of Texas at Arlington and serve as an instructor for the Regional Police Academy. His expertise in law enforcement also led him to Afghanistan in 2006, where he spent a year training Afghan police command staff and officers under the Department of State, assisting with post-war efforts to rebuild the country’s security forces.
